Arizona Open Enrollment

Arizona is one of the most school-choice-friendly states in the country. Under open enrollment, families can apply to any public or charter school statewide — you are not limited to your neighborhood-zoned school.

Arizona law (A.R.S. 15-816.01) guarantees families the right to enroll their children in any public school in the state, regardless of residency within that school district.

Charter schools are also open enrollment by default — they accept students from anywhere in Arizona, subject to capacity.

Paradise Valley is primarily served by the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD), one of the highest-rated districts in the state. Many families in PV also take advantage of open enrollment to attend top-rated charter or specialty schools nearby.

Transportation is generally the responsibility of the family when attending an out-of-district school.

How to Enroll

1

Research Schools

Use GreatSchools.org or the Arizona School Report Cards to compare ratings, test scores, and programs for schools you're considering.

2

Contact the School

Reach out to your preferred school directly to confirm availability, enrollment deadlines, and any required documents.

3

Submit Application

Complete the school's enrollment application. Charter schools may have a lottery if demand exceeds capacity.

4

Provide Documentation

Typically required: proof of Arizona residency, birth certificate, immunization records, and previous school transcripts.

5

Arrange Transportation

For out-of-district schools, families are responsible for transportation. Some charter schools offer limited bus routes.
